Counselling Internship Program

This program is open to candidates who hold either a Masters degree in psychology, counselling or a related field, or who are currently in a Masters program and have completed basic counselling theory. The objective of the program is to provide intermediate and advanced training in counselling skills with individuals, couples, and families. SHARE is a non-profit agency that has served the Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody Communities for 38 years. The program starts in September and concludes in April.

What does the Program consist of?

Each student will receive a minimum of 2 hours of individual supervision per week. A series of workshops will be offered across the 2 semesters for a total of about 50 hours of instruction. Topics covered include: Substance use, trauma, youth issues, domestic violence, depression and couple therapy. Students are expected to schedule an average minimum of 7 sessions per week and work one evening per week. Overall, interns are expected to work about 18 hours per week. Clients will be provided by SHARE through existing professional programs. There are also possibilities for involvement in some of the groups at the SHARE Counselling Centre.

Applicants should be aware that this is a challenging placement. At a minimum, the Intern should have an advanced level of active listening skills. Many clients will be up against histories of sexual abuse, violence, suicidal ideation/behaviour, problematic substance use, and poverty. Students should also be comfortable working from a strength based collaborative focus in contrast to a focus upon problems.

Tuition Payments of $250.00 are due on September 30th and $75.00 on January 31st. Any special needs for internship tuition payments should be discussed with Tom Hetherington, phone 604-937-6960.
